Officially, the
Cuneo Lung Cancer Study Group (CuLCaSG) was founded in January
20, 1994, in Cuneo, an alpine town of northwest Italy.
An informal lung cancer group, however, has been active at the "A. Carle"
Hospital for Chest Diseases since 1982, thanks to the work of two thoracic oncologists,
the doctors G. Buccheri and D. Ferrigno. The history of the
group strictly coincides with that of the two founders.
Dr. Gianfranco Buccheri is
presently the Scientific Director of the Group. He is mainly responsible for
the CuLCaSG scientific production.
Dr. Buccheri is a Thoracic Oncology Consultant at
the S. Croce and Carle Hospital (Cuneo). He has been a visiting clinician in both
Respiratory and Oncology departments in the United States (Mayo Clinic, M.D. Anderson
Hospital, Pittsburgh Cancer Institute) and United Kingdom (Bromptom Hospital and London
University College). He has contributed nearly 200 original
investigations at more than 68 International Meetings and has authored more than 120
original articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. He has served as a
referee for the Cancer Journal, the Monaldi Archives of Chest Diseases, Thorax, The
European Respiratory Journal, and Lung Cancer. In August 1997, he received a special
recognition by ALCASE, the only organization worldwide dedicated solely to lung cancer
patients. For more information visit the Dr.
Buccheri 's C.V. page.
Dr. Domenico Ferrigno is presently
the President of the Study Group. He has several organizing functions within
CuLCaSG and is also an important scientific contributor within the Group. He
is Thoracic Oncology Consultant at the S. Croce and Carle Hospital (Cuneo).
His scientific production mostly overlaps that of Dr. Buccheri.
